Situation Analysis – The Organization

One type of difficulty in analyzing situations in organizations is that we do not separate ourselves from the day-to-day operations. We get so caught up in doing the work that we do not manage the work that needs to be done. Michael Gerger in his book, The E-Myth, describes this behaviour as ‘working on the organization rather than in it’. He goes on in the book to provide detailed strategies on how to go about changing your focus. Using a storytelling approach, he follows the progress of an entrepreneur who owns a bakeshop, as she begins to plan, design, delegate, and manage her business to its future state of success and sustainability. While the example is drawn from business it functions equally well in the not for profit organization.
